CANBERRA HOSPITAL
Medical Services
Annual Salary: $69,879- $85,925
Closing date: 25 June 2009

MEDICAL SRMOs - BASIC PHYSICIAN TRAINING
These full-time clinical positions would be suitable for Basic Trainees (Internal Medicine) preparing for the FRACP Part I exam. Successful applicants, appointed on a full-time basis, will be expected to complete 2 terms over the remainder of the year. The opportunity may exist for part-time training. SRMOs/Registrars are exposed to inpatient & outpatient settings in a wide spectrum of medical sub-specialties, including Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology/Toxicology, Haematology, Oncology, Neurology, Palliative Care (Clare Holland House), Renal Medicine, Rheumatology/Dermatology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Thoracic Medicine and Intensive Care. General Medical rotations are available at Calvary Hospital, a 240-bed hospital (Level 1, secondment) in Canberra. One rotation may be a relief/nights term. A pool of SRMOs/registrars shares the duty of servicing the after-hours medical registrar cover for the hospital. General Medical rotations may also be available at Bega District Hospital.
Successful applicants will be responsible for day to day patient care with elements of supervision of junior staff. All Basic Physician Trainees are under direct supervision of consultant staff. Registrars/SRMOs will be encouraged to be involved in the training of junior medical officers, medical students & allied health workers rotating through the unit, and to participate in quality assurance and outcome measure activities. Many departments invite their registrars to be involved with clinical trials activity within the unit.
The hospital has a well established and ever evolving training program designed for preparation for the Royal Australian College of Physicians Part 1 fellowship examinations. This includes a formal tutorial program (Global Health/RACP Vic teleconferenced series) and an intensive, case-based program designed to prepare trainees seamlessly for both the written and clinical examinations.
Canberra Hospital offers an ideal environment for basic physician trainees. The hospital is large enough to enjoy the advantages of tertiary metropolitan hospitals, but small enough to allow the personal and professional development that is sometimes overlooked in a busy inner-city hospital.
Medical SRMOs will generally undertake duties of less responsibility than Medical Registrars but from time to time, they may be required to work as a Medical Registrar. During these periods, they may become eligible for an appropriate 'higher duties allowance'.

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SENIOR RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICER IN MEDICINE (Basic Physician Trainee - PGY3)
ESSENTIAL
1. Qualifications leading to unconditional registration as a Medical Practitioner with the ACT Medical Board, or sufficient clinical experience to gain conditional registration. The Basic Physician Training (BPT) Program Rcruitment Committee will assess the suitability for the position of conditional registrants.
2. Experience commensurate with the position of Senior Resident Medical Officer in Medicine in order to provide inpatient and outpatient medical care to patients attending broad ranging clinical services in internal medicine, under registrar or consultant supervision. This includes skills in clinical appraisal, the ability to use initiative and work independently, the appropriate use of laboratory and imaging investigations, well-developed skills in clinical record keeping and an appreciation of medical ethics and patient confidentiality.
3. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including the areas of medical record keeping, clinical handover and the timely and efficient liaison with other departments (medical and allied health) providing consultative services.
4. A demonstrable commitment to a career in internal medicine or one of its subspecialties, with the ability to pursue both formal education programs and self-education.
5. The ability to work in multi disciplinary teams. Applicants must show appreciation of this model of health care delivery and be able to operate fluently and efficiently within it with a high level of understanding and respect of all team members' roles.
6. Demonstrated ability to undertake out of hours shift duties, under the direct supervision of a more senior medical officer.
7. Commitment to the formal and informal teaching of medical students, junior medical staff and other health professionals.
DESIRABLE
8. Knowledge of quality improvement and evidence based medicine as it relates to clinical practice.
9. Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety issues and Equal Employment Opportunity principles and practices.
10. Competence in basic computing skills (word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs).
11. An interest in clinical and translational research.
12. Completion of an Advanced Life Support Course.
DUTY STATEMENT
The aim of the Senior Medical Resident Officer (SRMO) position is to allow for a transition between resident and registrar responsibilities. It is appropriate for those trainees who do not yet feel comfortable with taking on the responsibilities of a registrar position, or who the physician training selection committee feel have not yet acquired the skills necessary for a registrar position.
The SRMO will be rotated through a selection of four clinical terms within the Division of Medicine during each year. These may also include Intensive Care Medicine, Palliative Care Medicine and Hospital-in-the Home. The terms will be allocated by the Director of Physician Training in accordance to the (1) preferences of the SRMO, (2) requirements of the Royal College of Physicians (RACP) for Physician Training and (3) demands of The Canberra Hospital. As a requirement of Basic Training by the RACP, all SRMO/registrars will be rotated to Calvary Hospital General Medicine at least once during their two-three years of Basic Training. If available in the future, a secondment term in a rural location may also be required.
The role of the SRMO may vary depending on the unit in which they are working. The SRMO may be directly responsible to the consultant and be working with more junior staff, or themself work under the supervision of registrars. They may be required to perform a combination of duties that are traditionally designated either as resident or registrar. The clinical unit is encouraged to offer the SRMO experience in the assessment of patients in the Emergency Department or consultative patients on the wards and, if appropriate, at least one outpatient clinic per week.
SRMOs are expected to provide competent and efficient management of all aspects of patient care, from acute presentation in the Emergency Department, through transition in hospital and subsequent outpatient follow-up. This will include patients admitted under their specialty team, as well as consultative referrals from other units. A co-operative relationship with the Emergency Department is to be maintained at all times entailing timely review of all Emergency patients likely to require ongoing care within the Division of Medicine.
SRMOs will be responsible for supervising and providing professional development for junior medical staff and medical students of the Australian University, during normal working hours and after hours. They will be actively encouraged to participate in various teaching activities throughout the hospital.
SRMOs must participate in the very well developed training program in Internal Medicine based at The Canberra Hospital. It will be expected that over two to three years they will progress to a level whereby the FRACP examination can be attempted with a fair likelihood of success.
SRMOs will be expected to participate in the Canberra Hospital after hours roster. This will initially be on the RESIDENT roster, in which case there is always more senior medical registrar support. As the SRMO develops professionally during the year, they may be rostered onto the Emergency Department medical registrar roster, IF deemed appropriate by the DPT. This will NOT include the medical registrar night roster.
Appropriate and effective medical handover is considered a fundamental skill of all SRMOs. All medical staff working within the Division of Medicine are expected to attend the weekday medical morning handover from 0800-0830. Punctuality is essential.
As a requirement of the RACP, all new Basic Trainees will participate in an Advanced Life Support course by the end of their first rotation. The hospital currently provides a one-day course in Advanced Life Support, which includes an assessment after one month. Registrars are also expected to undertake a two-hour refresher course in Advanced Life Support on a yearly basis.
Although not considered essential in Basic Training, SRMOs are encouraged to participate in a small research project or case report, which will be suitable to present at the annual combined ACT RACP and RACS meeting in October-November.
