Staff Attorney-ACLU Drug Law Reform Project, Santa Cruz, CA(5/20/2009)

Career Opportunity
Staff Attorney, [DLRP-19]
American Civil Liberties Union
Drug Law Reform Project, Santa Cruz, CA
OVERVIEW:
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), one of the nation’s
foremost public interest organizations in defense of the Bill of Rights, is
seeking a dynamic and resourcefulStaff Attorneyfor its Drug
Law Reform Project in the Santa Cruz, California office.
The goal of the Drug Law Reform Project is to end punitive drug policies that
cause widespread violation of constitutional and human rights, as well as unprecedented
levels of incarceration. Founded in 1998, the Project brings lawsuits throughout
the country with lasting impact on public understanding of, and government response
to, drug use and drug policies.
The Project’s legal strategies are built on the idea that fighting for
civil rights means more than just persuading judges. It means changing society’s
stigma relating to drug use and policies. We work on the front lines with communities
most affected by drugs and drug laws to integrate litigation with innovative
public education campaigns and to develop tools to help these communities demand
justice.
The Project has an unparalleled track record, having successfully litigated
issues ranging from racial profiling in drug law enforcement to protecting medical
marijuana users and their doctors from prosecution. We will continue that tradition
of success, combining litigation, education, and community empowerment to achieve
a humane and sensible drug policy that respects basic human rights and the liberties
enshrined in our nation’s Constitution.
The Project’s current priorities are challenging racial disparities in
drug law enforcement, punishment of non-violent marijuana users and drug sentencing
reform.
The Project’s current litigation docket includes cases in state and federal
courts and administrative agencies challenging crack vs. powder cocaine sentencing
disparity, federal obstruction of medical marijuana, forced random drug testing
of public school teachers, and abuse of the grand jury process to chill speech
advocating drug policy reform. Other issues of interest include law enforcement’s
misuse of confidential informants, alternatives to incarceration for drug offenders,
student drug testing, and police harassment of sterile syringe exchange programs
and other health-based approaches to drug use and abuse. The Project represents
the first national effort to harness litigation in combination with coordinated
advocacy and community organizing as a tool of drug policy reform. For more
information, please visitwww.aclu.org/drugpolicy.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

and other health-based approaches to drug use and abuse. The Project represents
the first national effort to harness litigation in combination with coordinated
advocacy and community organizing as a tool of drug policy reform. Project attorneys

Director of Washington Legislative Office-ACLU Washington Legislative Office, D.C.(6/5/2009)

CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Director of Washington Legislative Office [WLOU-12]
American Civil Liberties Union
Washington Legislative Office, D.C.
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Unionseeks a Director of its
Washington Legislative Office (WLO). The WLO’s purpose is to influence
the outcome of policies on behalf of the ACLU before Congress and the Executive
Branch. The Director of the WLO reports directly to the ACLU Executive Director,
Anthony D. Romero, and serves as an active member of the national organization’s
senior management.
For almost ninety years, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has served
as the nation’s premier guardian of the liberties that define our democracy.
Based in New York City, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and
Washington, DC. The organization, its affiliates, almost 300 local chapters
and over 500,000 members remain a bulwark in the defense of liberty. The ACLU
is known for assembling broad coalitions of conservatives, moderates and progressives
to advance civil liberties on a wide range of issues including national security,
racial justice, reproductive freedom, LGBT rights, criminal justice, freedom
of speech and privacy – all of which are of increased salience at the
federal level since the recent national election.
While much of the ACLU’s work has been in the courtrooms and in the court
of public opinion, the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office has led the
efforts to enact, to block, to defeat or repeal legislation that would positively
or adversely impact civil liberties and civil rights. Its staff has been successful
in shaping, propelling and defeating several legislative measures. ACLU leadership
and lobbyists have testified before Congress, conducted dozens of briefings
for members of Congress and their staffs, organized grassroots lobbying efforts
and placed hundreds of op-eds, editorials, television and radio interviews.
These efforts have become increasingly important in the changed political environment
of the past year.
THE ROLE
The ACLU seeks a Director of its Washington Legislative Office (WLO). Reporting
directly to the Executive Director of the ACLU, the Director will be responsible
for leading the team charged with advancing the mission of the organization
in Washington. Since 2001, the WLO has grown considerably. It operates on an
annual budget of $6.3 million with over 30 employees and a number of consultants.
The Washington office staff is focused primarily on Lobbying and Legislative
affairs, and also developing strategies to deploy the large, active ACLU membership
base in support of legislative and administrative policy changes. The Washington
staff work closely and very collaboratively with their counterparts in the New
York office and the state ACLU affiliates. The Director of the office serves
as an active member of the national organization’s senior management team.
The new Director will be tasked with working with the new leadership in the
House, Senate and the White House, bringing the expertise and deep knowledge
of the ACLU on civil liberties and civil rights issues. In addition to providing
leadership in legislative battles, the new Director will be expected to attend
to the following challenges during the first 18 months of his/her tenure:
* Build and maintain strategic relationships with Congress and the executive
branch.
* Provide inspiring leadership for a staff comprised of talented expert lobbyists
and field organizers.
* Continue the work of building alliances and coalitions with a broad range
of civil libertarians from across the political spectrum.
* In close cooperation with affiliate staff, develop a list of targeted Congressional
and state legislative districts in which to concentrate grassroots organizing
and identification of key supporters to assist with lobbying and other efforts.
* Work closely with affiliate staff to establish systems to anticipate and
monitor legislative developments in the states as well as to share successful
and unsuccessful tactics and strategies to deal with them. Plan and execute
grassroots mobilization strategies, including event organizing, creation of
public outreach materials, and public speaking regarding these issues.
* Work to increase the organization’s capacity to effectively mobilize
the ACLU’s 500,000 members, ACLU affiliates and other concerned individuals
about pending federal legislation and ACLU legislative priorities.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
This is an extremely important opportunity for a new Director to play a central
and leading role in what will be a new and challenging effort to protect the
liberties that define our democracy.
The ACLU seeks a person to assume the leadership of the Washington Office during
a period of remarkable and exciting change. The new Director, in cooperation
with his/her staff in Washington, the national headquarters in New York and
in affiliates around the nation will be expected to craft and execute a comprehensive
legislative lobbying agenda.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
While no one person will possess all of the qualities described below, the
ideal candidate will have the following professional experience:
* Finely honed political skills, an understanding of federal legislative and
administrative processes and a thorough appreciation as to how Washington
works, current political alignments and opportunities for collaboration with
a broad range of other groups.
* A sophisticated understanding of how to be effective in the public policy
arena. Experience formulating strategies that tie together research, legal
analysis, organizing, lobbying, communications and litigation.
* A history of working collaboratively and successfully with people and organizations
from a broad range of ideological positions, religious views and ethnicities.
* Demonstrated commitment to racial justice and civil rights issues and an
understanding that these issues are central to the overall protection of civil
liberties.
* Experience working closely and effectively with broadcast, virtual and print
media.
* A seasoned and effective leader with a record of recruiting and developing
a highly talented and diverse staff, and managing budget and administration.
A person who provides clear direction, delegates well and assumes ultimate
responsibility.
* An interest in working with the Executive Director and other senior managers
in raising funds, with which to pursue the organization’s ambitious
agenda.
* A willingness to serve as a speaker at affiliate and other ACLU events.
* Demonstrated and proven leadership experience working in an organization
with chapter and affiliate offices.
* Bachelor of Arts or Sciences in a relevant field required and law degree
or graduate training preferred, but not required.
* Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU.

of government. Regardless of political background, he/she needs to be politically
savvy, and have the ability to cultivate strong relationships with all key
external constituencies and policy makers.
Setting Strategy
* The new Director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office will
be a strategic leader with strong political acumen and interpersonal skills.
He/she will have outstanding judgment and be a critical thinker, able to make
strategic decisions about the direction of the organization from both a public
policy and operational perspective. The next leader must be able to assimilate
and balance the many different interests of all various constituents.
Leading Teams/Management
* The ideal candidate will possess management experience along with a demonstrated
track record of effectively running a team or organization. He/she must work
well in a team environment and be able to inspire and motivate staff and the

as well as the resources in the membership. The successful candidate will
value talent and inspire and motivate teams to work together with a clear
direction and purpose.

* While the successful candidate must be a decisive, strategic leader, this
individual must also have outstanding interpersonal skills. He/she will be
a diplomat, collaborator, motivator and relationship builder. He/she must
have the ability to build relationships and use influence effectively to accomplish

side of difficult situations. He/she must have self-confidence but also be
humble. He/she needs to be gracious in manner, comfortable working with people
from all walks of life. The successful candidate will have a style that is
collegial, approachable, direct and decisive.

2010 Summer Legal Internship Opportunity
IMMIGRANTS’ RIGHTS PROJECT
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION
New York and California Offices
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), America's foremost
advocate of individual rights, is a non-partisan organization founded in 1920,
with more than 5 National offices and over 50 affiliates throughout the country.
The Immigrants’ Rights Project of the ACLU seeks legal interns for theSummer of 2010.
OVERVIEW:
The Immigrants’ Rights Project is a national project of the American Civil
Liberties Union Foundation with offices in New York and California. Using targeted
impact litigation, advocacy and public outreach, the Project carries on the
ACLU’s historic commitment to protecting the civil rights and civil liberties
of immigrants. In federal district and appellate courts, including the Supreme
Court, the Project conducts the nation’s largest impact litigation program
dedicated to defending and expanding the rights of immigrants, enforcing the
guarantees of the Constitution and achieving equal justice under the law.
The Project has focused on challenging laws that deny immigrants access to
the judicial system, impose indefinite and mandatory detention, and constitute
discrimination on the basis of “alienage” by governmental and private
entities. In addition, the Project has been challenging constitutional abuses
that arise from immigration enforcement at the federal, state, and local levels,
including litigation against worksite and home raids, local anti-immigrant employment
and housing laws, and improper enforcement of federal immigration laws by local
sheriffs. IRP’s efforts in the enforcement arena seek to ensure the constitutional
protections of the Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, combat racial profiling
arising from actual or pretextual immigration enforcement that subjects immigrant
communities to racism and hostility, and challenge government policies and practices
that undermine or deny immigrants’ ability to effectuate their existing
legal rights.
The Education component of the Project provides information about immigrants’
rights to immigrant communities nationwide. The Project works with the English

sheriffs. IRP’s efforts in the enforcement arena seek to ensure the constitutional
protections of the Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, combat racial profiling

Summer 2010 Legal Internship-ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, NY(9/23/2009)

SUMMER 2010 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM PROJECT, NY
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)is a nationwide,
nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to the principles of liberty and
equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution. TheReproductive Freedom
Project (RFP)of the ACLU seeks legal interns to work full-time in
New York City forSummer 2010.
Since its founding in the 1920s, the ACLU has fought to ensure that the decision
whether or not to have a child be informed, meaningful, and protected from unwarranted
government interference. The ACLU is particularly committed to ensuring that
individuals’ reproductive rights are not compromised because of their
race, youth, or economic status, and believes that reproductive rights work
must be informed by broader racial and social justice considerations.
Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, the ACLU Reproductive Freedom
Project works to protect access to the full spectrum of reproductive health
care, from sexuality education and family planning services to prenatal care
and childbearing assistance to abortion counseling and services.
For more than thirty years, the ACLU has been involved, in one way or another,
with virtually every reproductive rights case to reach the Supreme Court, including
Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, in which the Project was
lead counsel. Through litigation and advocacy, Project lawyers work to challenge
bans on safe abortion procedures; to reverse prison policies that restrict reproductive
rights, including the permission of shackling during labor or denying transportation
for abortions; to restore Medicaid coverage for abortions to ensure real choice
for low-income women; to defend the rights of pregnant women to make decisions
about their health care and those who continue their pregnancies despite a drug
dependency or other health condition; to promote teens’ access to confidential
reproductive health care; and to ensure that young people receive comprehensive
sex education. The Project is also the nation’s leading expert on the
intersection between reproductive rights and the religion and free speech clauses
of the First Amendment.
The Project is unique among reproductive rights organizations in that we work
with the ACLU’s nationwide network of affiliates and other attorneys in
the organization who specialize in other civil liberties areas, including free
speech, race and poverty issues, and lesbian and gay rights.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:
Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship funds
for the internship. Arrangements can also be made with the student’s law
school for work/study stipends. However, summer interns who do not secure funding
will be eligible for a modest stipend provided by the Project.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will be working closely with Project staff including the following:
* Assist with the Project’s litigation, legislation and policy work.
* Assist in all aspects of litigation including legal research, factual investigation,
and drafting of memoranda, affidavits, and briefs.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
* Current first year and second year law students.
* Knowledge of reproductive rights law is not required, but an interest in
reproductive rights, civil liberties, racial and social justice, and issues
affecting low-income women is essential.

Director, National Prison and Over-Incarceration Project(8/20/2009)

CAREER
OPPORTUNITY
DIRECTOR [NPP-15]
AMERICAN
CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
NATIONAL
PRISON AND OVER-INCARCERATION PROJECT
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is
seeking a Director for its National Prison and Over-Incarceration Project
(previously known as the National Prison Project).
Through strategic
litigation and public advocacy, the ACLU has long been a national leader in
protecting the rights of those imprisoned and in challenging the policies of
over-incarceration that have led the United States to imprison more people than
any other country in the world.
This is an opportune moment
to reform those policies. There is a growing consensus among criminal
justice experts and policymakers that America’s criminal justice system has
relied too heavily on incarceration as the first and often only response for
non-violent behavior that could better be addressed through other means.
The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years
and now exceeds two million. Facilities are overcrowded; medical systems
are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and
prison violence has increased. This failed experiment does not make us
safer, it is not affordable, and it exacerbates the racial disparities that have
long plagued the criminal justice system.
The ACLU is therefore
launching a major organizational initiative to address the issue of
over-incarceration to be spearheaded by the National Prison and
Over-Incarceration Project. With 53 affiliates, the ACLU is uniquely
positioned to develop and implement a national strategy on
over-incarceration. The Director of the National Prison and
Over-Incarceration Project will play a leading role in that initiative, as well
as overseeing the ACLU’s ongoing litigation on behalf of prisoners’
rights.
ROLES
& RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director
has overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Project, and
reports to the National Legal Director, or his designee. Those
responsibilities include:
* Developing and
implementing a national strategy for the ACLU to address the issue of
over-incarceration through an integrated program of advocacy, research, public
education, and litigation.
* Maintaining
the Project’s historic commitment to ensuring that the nation’s prisons and
jails are operated in a manner that is consistent with constitutional and
statutory standards. Since its founding in 1972, The Project has brought
successful litigation on behalf of prisoners in more than 25 states; since 1991,
the Project has represented prisoners in 5 cases before the United States
Supreme Court.
* Working with
other ACLU Projects and Programs addressing related issues, including the Racial
Justice Program, the Drug Law Reform Project, the Women’s Rights Project, and
the Capital Punishment Project.
* Providing
expertise and assistance to the ACLU’s Washington Legislative
Office.
* Supporting and
promoting the work of ACLU affiliates throughout the
nation.
* Serving as a
national spokesperson for the ACLU on criminal justice
issues.
* Hiring and
supervising Project staff.
* Fundraising
and fiscal management.
EXPERIENCE
& QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a J.D.
degree and:
* Commitment to
the mission and goals of the Project and the ACLU.
* Significant
litigation and/or policy experience on criminal justice
issues.
* Superb
interpersonal and communication skills.
* Excellent
analytic skills
* Willingness to
travel.
Applicants must also have
the proven ability to:
* Exercise
leadership internally and externally.
* Create
solutions to complex legal and policy questions.
* Manage a
multi-functional advocacy program.
* Write and
speak persuasively.

Summer 2010 Legal Internship-ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & AIDS Project, NY(8/17/2009)

Summer 2010 Legal Internship
First & Second Year Law Students
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & AIDS Project, NY
OVERVIEW:
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) & AIDS Project of theAmerican
Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)seeks Law students to work full-time in
the New York City National Office forSummer 2010.
America’s foremost advocate of individual rights, the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) is a nonpartisan organization founded in 1920. With more
than 5 national offices and 50 affiliates throughout the country, it is widely
regarded as the nation’s premier public interest law firm.
Founded in 1986, the LGBT & AIDS Project is a special division of the national
office of the ACLU. The goal of the LGBT & AIDS Project is the creation
of a society in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and people
with HIV enjoy the basic rights of equality, privacy and personal autonomy,
and freedom of belief, expression and association. This means an America where
there’s the ability to live open and honest lives without fear of discrimination
or abuse, where there’s respect for our identities, relationships and
families, and where there’s fair treatment in employment, schools, health
care, housing and public places and programs.
The Project brings “impact” lawsuits in state and federal courts
throughout the country – cases designed to have a significant effect on
the lives of LGBT people and those with HIV/AIDS. The Project’s legal
strategies are built on the idea that fighting for civil rights means not only
persuading judges but also ultimately changing the way people think. As we litigate
for change, we implement targeted media, online and outreach campaigns to change
public attitudes through education and to give people on the frontlines the
tools they need to act.
As a part of the ACLU, the Project is in a unique position to work for equality.
The ACLU’s national network of affiliates broadens the Project’s
reach into every locality and into the federal government. Today, the ACLU brings
more LGBT cases and advocacy initiatives than any other national civil rights
organization. The Project strives to ensure that the racial and economic diversity
of the LGBT community is reflected in its work and continues to explore ways
to make its efforts more sensitive to the needs of people of color and people
who are economically disadvantaged. The Project’s work as part of the
broad civil liberties agenda of the ACLU exemplifies the notion that the LGBT
community and the community of those living with HIV/AIDS must work in concert
with other social change movements in order to achieve a just society for all.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:
Legal Interns will help with the litigation and legislative/policy work of the
Project. They will do legal and other kinds of research, work with clients,
draft policy and legal memos, and help write pleadings, briefs and other litigation
documents.
This internship is unpaid. Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship funds for the internship. However, summer interns who do not secure funding will be eligible for a modest stipend provided by the Project..

Director, National Prison and Over-Incarceration Project(8/20/2009)

CAREER
OPPORTUNITY
DIRECTOR [NPP-15]
AMERICAN
CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
NATIONAL
PRISON AND OVER-INCARCERATION PROJECT
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is
seeking a Director for its National Prison and Over-Incarceration Project
(previously known as the National Prison Project).
Through strategic
litigation and public advocacy, the ACLU has long been a national leader in
protecting the rights of those imprisoned and in challenging the policies of
over-incarceration that have led the United States to imprison more people than
any other country in the world.
This is an opportune moment
to reform those policies. There is a growing consensus among criminal
justice experts and policymakers that America’s criminal justice system has
relied too heavily on incarceration as the first and often only response for
non-violent behavior that could better be addressed through other means.
The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years
and now exceeds two million. Facilities are overcrowded; medical systems
are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and
prison violence has increased. This failed experiment does not make us
safer, it is not affordable, and it exacerbates the racial disparities that have
long plagued the criminal justice system.
The ACLU is therefore
launching a major organizational initiative to address the issue of
over-incarceration to be spearheaded by the National Prison and
Over-Incarceration Project. With 53 affiliates, the ACLU is uniquely
positioned to develop and implement a national strategy on
over-incarceration. The Director of the National Prison and
Over-Incarceration Project will play a leading role in that initiative, as well
as overseeing the ACLU’s ongoing litigation on behalf of prisoners’
rights.
ROLES
& RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director
has overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Project, and
reports to the National Legal Director, or his designee. Those
responsibilities include:
* Developing and
implementing a national strategy for the ACLU to address the issue of
over-incarceration through an integrated program of advocacy, research, public
education, and litigation.
* Maintaining
the Project’s historic commitment to ensuring that the nation’s prisons and
jails are operated in a manner that is consistent with constitutional and
statutory standards. Since its founding in 1972, The Project has brought
successful litigation on behalf of prisoners in more than 25 states; since 1991,
the Project has represented prisoners in 5 cases before the United States
Supreme Court.
* Working with
other ACLU Projects and Programs addressing related issues, including the Racial
Justice Program, the Drug Law Reform Project, the Women’s Rights Project, and

2010 Summer Legal Internship-ACLU National Prison Project, Washington, DC.(10/20/2009)

SUMMER 2010 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
NOTICE TO FIRST AND SECOND YEAR LAW STUDENTS
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
NATIONAL PRISON PROJECT
WASHINGTON, DC
The National Prison Project of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
invites first and second year law students to apply for summer 2010 Legal Internships.
OVERVIEW:
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), America's foremost
advocate of individual rights, is a non-partisan organization founded in 1920,
with more than 5 National offices and over 50 affiliates throughout the country.
Founded in 1972 by the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Prison
Project seeks to ensure constitutional conditions of confinement and strengthen
prisoners’ rights through class action litigation and public education.
Our policy priorities include reducing prison overcrowding, improving prisoner
medical care, eliminating violence and maltreatment in prisons and jails, and
minimizing the reliance on incarceration as a criminal justice sanction. The
Project also publishes a semi-annual Journal, coordinates a nationwide network
of litigators, conducts training and public education conferences, and provides
expert advice and technical assistance to local community groups and lawyers
throughout the country.
The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years
with the predictable consequence that facilities are overcrowded; medical systems
are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and
idleness and inadequate supervision lead to greater levels of violence. As our
national prison and jail population has climbed to over two million persons,
it has grown increasingly racially skewed. On any given day, one-third of all
African-American males are under some form of criminal justice supervision,
and for black males in their twenties, one in every eight is in prison or jail.
These trends have been exacerbated by the impact of the "war on drugs,"
with three fourths of all those convicted of drug offenses being persons of
color, far out of proportion to their share of drug users in society. The consequences
of these racial disparities in the criminal justice system reach beyond the
prison gates: for example, as a result of state felony disenfranchisement laws,
an estimated 13% of all black males are not eligible to vote.
The Project, with a staff of six attorneys, has fought and continues to fight
unlawful prison conditions and practices through successful litigation on behalf
of prisoners in more than 25 states. Since 1991, the Project has represented
prisoners in five cases before the United States Supreme Court. It is the only
organization litigating prison conditions of confinement nationwide on behalf
of men, women, and juveniles. Currently, the Project represents over 50,000
prisoners housed in prisons and jails in 20 states, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
OVERVIEW:
The legal interns will work closely with staff lawyers on major class actions
and damages cases in federal court. The work includes drafting pleadings and
briefs, participating in discovery and motion practice, and working on trials
and appeals. In addition, the clerks will provide technical assistance to ACLU
state affiliates, cooperating lawyers, and other lawyers who seek assistance
from the Project.
Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship funds for
the internship. Arrangements can also be made with the student’s law school
for work/study credits. However, interns who are unable to secure funding will
be eligible for a stipend from the Project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
First and second year law students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have:
* Strong analytical, research and verbal skills.
* Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Commitment to civil liberties and public interest law.
* Familiarity with criminal justice issues is highly desirable.
HOW TO APPLY:
Applications consist of a cover letter, current resume, the names and phone
numbers of three references, and at least one legal writing sample. Applications
should be sent via e-mail togbigelow@dcaclu.org.

As we litigate for change, we use targeted media, online and outreach campaigns to change public attitudes, as well as provide advocacy tools to help citizens take action in their community. As part of the broad civil liberties mission of the ACLU, the Project brings together the LGBT and HIV/AIDS communities with other social change movements to achieve a just society for all. 2009 Fall Undergraduate Internship- Women's Rights Project, NY(9/4/2009)

2009 FALL UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIP
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION FOUNDATION
WOMEN’S RIGHTS PROJECT, NY
OVERVIEW:
Founded in 1920, theAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), with more than 5 National offices and 50 affiliates across the country, is America’s foremost advocate of individual rights. The Women’s Right Project of the ACLU seeks an undergraduate intern for theFall of 2009.
Founded in 1972 by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Women’s Rights Project (WRP) has been a leader in the legal battles to ensure women’s full equality in American society. WRP is dedicated to the advancement of the rights and interests of women, with a particular focus on low-income women, women of color, and immigrant women – those who historically have been the most deeply victimized by gender bias and face the most pervasive barriers to equality today.
WRP focuses on four core priority areas: employment (including the rights of low-wage immigrant women workers, trafficking victims, women with criminal convictions, women in non-traditional employment, and welfare recipients), violence against women (including battered women’s rights to be free from discrimination in housing, employment, and government services), criminal and juvenile justice issues affecting women and girls (including the impact of drug laws on women and families, as well as the rights of girls in the juvenile justice system), and education (including single sex education, the rights of pregnant and parenting teens, and sexual assault in schools). Cutting across these core priorities, WRP seeks to bring an international human rights framework to our litigation and advocacy. Through litigation, community outreach, advocacy, and public education, WRP pushes for change and systemic reform in those institutions that perpetuate discrimination against women.
The Women’s Rights Project has overall responsibility for implementing ACLU policy in the area of gender discrimination. WRP conducts direct litigation, files amicus curiae briefs, provides support for ACLU affiliate litigation, serves as a resource for ACLU legislative work on women’s rights and seeks to advance ACLU policy goals through public education, organizing and coalition advocacy. WRP has been an active participant in virtually all of the major gender discrimination litigation in the Supreme Court, in Congressional and public education efforts to remedy gender discrimination and other endeavors on behalf of women.

2009 FALL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
NOTICE TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
Reproductive Freedom Project, NY
The Reproductive Freedom Project of theAmerican Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU)seeks applicants for theUndergraduate Fall Internshipin New York City.
OVERVIEW:
For more than thirty years, the ACLU has been involved, in one way or another,
with virtually every reproductive rights case to reach the Supreme Court, includingAyotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, in which the
Project was lead counsel. Through litigation and advocacy, Project lawyers work
to challenge bans on safe abortion procedures; to strike prison policies that
restrict reproductive rights, including by permitting shackling during labor
or denying transportation for abortions; to restore Medicaid coverage for abortions
to ensure real choice for low-income women; to defend the rights of pregnant
women to make decisions about their health care and those who continue their
pregnancies despite a drug dependency or other health condition; to promote
teens’ access to confidential reproductive health care; and to ensure
that young people receive comprehensive sex education. The Project is also the
nation’s leading expert on the intersection between reproductive rights
and the religion and free speech clauses of the First Amendment.
The Project is unique among reproductive rights organizations in that we work
with the ACLU’s nationwide network of affiliates and other attorneys in
the organization who specialize in other civil liberties areas, including free
speech, race and poverty issues, and lesbian and gay rights.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Project's legal assistants

Freedom Project on a range of significant issues and projects. The work will
include:

for theMarvin A. Karpatkin Fellowship, which will begin in
September 2010.
The Fellowship was established by the ACLU Board of Directors in memory of
Marvin M. Karpatkin, the late General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties
Union, who died in January 1975, at the age of 48. Mr. Karpatkin was one of
the ACLU's most active attorneys during the 1960s and early 1970s. He left his
special mark in the areas of selective service and military law. His interest
in those areas grew out of his own strong opposition to the Vietnam War and
his desire to help those who, younger than himself, were faced with performing
military service in a war they would not support.
Racial Justice Program (RJP) attorneys and staff work to challenge racial discrimination
and related issues that have a disparate impact on communities of color, particularly
in the areas of criminal justice and education. In the area of criminal justice,
we are dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting
and incarceration of people of color. In the area of education, we seek to ensure
that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity.
Specifically, we have filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of
indigent criminal and juvenile defense, racial profiling, and disparate educational
opportunities. We have also campaigned against the racially-disproportionate
imposition of incarceration and school discipline.
