STAFF ATTORNEY [NPP-10]
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
National Prison Project, Washington, DC
The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (“ACLU”)is a nationwide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with more than 500,000 members dedicated to the principles of liberty and equality embodied in the Constitution and our nation’s civil rights laws. The ACLU invites applications for a staff attorney to work with the ACLU's National Prison Project in the ACLU’s Washington, D.C. National Office.
OVERVIEW:
Founded in 1972 by the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Prison Project seeks to ensure constitutional conditions of confinement in prisons, jails, juvenile facilities, and immigration detention facilities. We have successfully litigated on behalf of prisoners in more than 25 states, and since 1991 we have represented prisoners in five cases before the United States Supreme Court. The Project is the only organization litigating conditions of confinement cases nationwide on behalf of men, women, and children.
Our policy priorities include reducing prison overcrowding, improving prisoner medical care, eliminating violence and maltreatment, and increasing oversight and accountability in prisons, jails, and other places of detention. The Project publishes a semi-annual Journal, coordinates a nationwide network of litigators, conducts training and public education conferences, and provides expert advice and technical assistance to local community groups and lawyers throughout the country.
The Project also works to challenge the policies of over-incarceration that have led the United States to imprison more people than any other country in the world. This is an opportune moment to reform those policies. There is a growing consensus among criminal justice experts and policymakers that America’s criminal justice system has relied too heavily on incarceration as the first and often only response for non-violent behavior that could better be addressed through other means. The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years and now approaches two and a half million. Facilities are overcrowded; medical systems are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and prison violence has increased. This failed experiment does not make us safer, it is not affordable, and it exacerbates the racial disparities that have long plagued the criminal justice system.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Litigate in federal courts, including appellate courts, throughout the country.
* Handle a substantial caseload of major class actions in federal court and work closely with other staff attorneys and local counsel.
* Draft pleadings and briefs, engage in discovery and motion practice, and conduct evidentiary hearings and oral arguments.
* Provide technical assistance and expert legal advice to local ACLU affiliates, cooperating attorneys and others who seek assistance from the Project.
* Conduct policy advocacy on prisoners’ rights, criminal justice, and immigration detention issues.
* Engage in public speaking and articulate ACLU views to a variety of audiences on a broad range of prisoners’ rights, criminal justice and civil liberties issues.
* Supervise paralegals.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
* Active bar membership and litigation experience, preferably in federal court. Significant litigation experience is preferred.
* A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and public interest law.
* A demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a team.
* Excellent legal research skills.
* Demonstrated ability to perform complex legal analytical work.
* Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
* Familiarity with criminal justice issues preferred.
* Ability to travel.
COMPENSATION:
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please send a cover letter, a current resume, the names and phone numbers of three references, and at least one legal writing sampleby email tohrjobs@aclu.org. Reference[NPP-10/ACLU-W]in subject line – or by mail to:

CAREER OPPORTUNITY

WOMEN'S RIGHTS PROJECT, NY America's foremost advocate of individual rights, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a non-partisan organization founded in 1920. With more than 5 National offices and with 50 affiliates throughout the country, it is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier public interest law firms. The Women's Right Project of the ACLU seeks legal interns for theSpring of 2010.
Founded in 1972 by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Women's Rights Project (WRP) has been a leader in the legal battles to ensure women's full equality in American society. WRP is dedicated to the advancement of the rights and interests of women, with a particular focus on low-income women, women of color, and immigrant women – those who historically have been the most deeply victimized by gender bias and face the most pervasive barriers to equality today.
WRP focuses on four core priority areas: employment (including the rights of low-wage immigrant women workers, trafficking victims, women with criminal convictions, women in non-traditional employment, and welfare recipients), violence against women (including battered women's rights to be free from discrimination in housing, employment, and government services), criminal and juvenile justice issues affecting women and girls (including the impact of drug laws on women and families, as well as the rights of girls in juvenile detention), and education (including single sex education and sexual assault in schools). Cutting across these core priorities, WRP seeks to bring an international human rights framework to our litigation and advocacy. Through litigation, community outreach, advocacy, and public education, WRP pushes for change and systemic reform in those institutions that perpetuate discrimination against women.
The Women's Rights Project has overall responsibility for implementing ACLU policy in the area of gender discrimination. WRP conducts direct litigation, filesamicus curiaebriefs, provides support for ACLU affiliate litigation, serves as a resource for ACLU legislative work on women's rights and seeks to advance ACLU policy goals through public education, organizing and coalition advocacy. SUMMER 2010 LEGAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
NOTICE TO FIRST AND SECOND YEAR LAW STUDENTS
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
NATIONAL PRISON PROJECT
WASHINGTON, DC
The National Prison Project of the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation invites first and second year law students to apply for summer 2010 Legal Internships.
OVERVIEW:
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), America's foremost advocate of individual rights, is a non-partisan organization founded in 1920, with more than 5 National offices and over 50 affiliates throughout the country.
Founded in 1972 by the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Prison Project seeks to ensure constitutional conditions of confinement and strengthen prisoners’ rights through class action litigation and public education. Our policy priorities include reducing prison overcrowding, improving prisoner medical care, eliminating violence and maltreatment in prisons and jails, and minimizing the reliance on incarceration as a criminal justice sanction. The Project also publishes a semi-annual Journal, coordinates a nationwide network of litigators, conducts training and public education conferences, and provides expert advice and technical assistance to local community groups and lawyers throughout the country.
The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years with the predictable consequence that facilities are overcrowded; medical systems are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and idleness and inadequate supervision lead to greater levels of violence. As our national prison and jail population has climbed to over two million persons, it has grown increasingly racially skewed. On any given day, one-third of all African-American males are under some form of criminal justice supervision, and for black males in their twenties, one in every eight is in prison or jail. These trends have been exacerbated by the impact of the "war on drugs," with three fourths of all those convicted of drug offenses being persons of color, far out of proportion to their share of drug users in society. The consequences of these racial disparities in the criminal justice system reach beyond the prison gates: for example, as a result of state felony disenfranchisement laws, an estimated 13% of all black males are not eligible to vote.
The Project, with a staff of six attorneys, has fought and continues to fight unlawful prison conditions and practices through successful litigation on behalf of prisoners in more than 25 states. Since 1991, the Project has represented prisoners in five cases before the United States Supreme Court. It is the only organization litigating prison conditions of confinement nationwide on behalf of men, women, and juveniles. Currently, the Project represents over 50,000 prisoners housed in prisons and jails in 20 states, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
OVERVIEW:
The legal interns will work closely with staff lawyers on major class actions and damages cases in federal court. The work includes drafting pleadings and briefs, participating in discovery and motion practice, and working on trials and appeals. In addition, the clerks will provide technical assistance to ACLU state affiliates, cooperating lawyers, and other lawyers who seek assistance from the Project.
Students are highly encouraged to seek Public Interest Fellowship funds for the internship. Arrangements can also be made with the student’s law school for work/study credits. However, interns who are unable to secure funding will be eligible for a stipend from the Project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
First and second year law students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants must have:
* Strong analytical, research and verbal skills.
* Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Commitment to civil liberties and public interest law.
* Familiarity with criminal justice issues is highly desirable.

Fall 2009 INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
NOTICE TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
National Prison Project, Washington, D.C.
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)National Prison Project seeks interns for fall 2009. The National Prison Project is a special project of the ACLU dedicated to improving conditions and upholding the rights of prisoners confined in American jails and prisons.
OVERVIEW:
Founded in 1972 by the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Prison Project seeks to ensure constitutional conditions of confinement in prisons, jails, juvenile facilities, and immigration detention facilities. We seek to promote prisoners’ rights through class action litigation and public education.
The work of the National Prison Project has never been more vital than it is now. The population in American prisons and jails has tripled in the past 15 years with the predictable consequence that facilities are overcrowded; medical systems are overwhelmed; work, education, and treatment programs are inadequate; and idleness and inadequate supervision lead to greater levels of violence. As our national prison and jail population has climbed to over two million people, it has grown increasingly racially skewed. On any given day, one-third of all African-American males are under some form of criminal justice supervision, and one in every eight black males in their twenties is in prison or jail. These trends have been exacerbated by the impact of the "war on drugs," with three fourths of all those convicted of drug offenses being persons of color. The consequences of these racial disparities in the criminal justice system reach beyond the prison gates: as a result of state felony disenfranchisement laws, an estimated 13% of all black males are not eligible to vote.
The Project, with a staff of eight lawyers, has fought and continues to fight unlawful prison conditions and practices through successful litigation on behalf of prisoners in more than 25 states. Since 1991, the Project has represented prisoners in five cases before the United States Supreme Court. It is the only organization litigating prison conditions of confinement nationwide on behalf of men, women, and children.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Assist in the production and distribution of advocacy materials.
* Gather updated information related to prison and jail conditions.
* Assist with administrative duties as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
* Students enrolled in an undergraduate program for communications, political science, sociology, or related field are encouraged to apply.
* Interest in criminal justice and a commitment to civil rights.
* Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
* Computer skills, including familiarity with internet research and MS Office.
* Effective oral and written communication skills.
The fall internships are unpaid positions. Arrangements can be made for community service, work/study or course credit. Internship schedules are flexible totaling approximately 10-16 hours per week. Shifts run morning or afternoon, between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Ideally, candidates will make a 2-3 month commitment to the Project.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please send an application, consisting of a cover letter and resume, to:

Founded in 1972 by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Women’s Rights Project (WRP) has been a leader in the legal battles to ensure women’s full equality in American society. Racial Justice Project, NY
OVERVIEW:
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)invites applications for theMarvin M. Karpatkin Fellowship, which will begin in September 2010.
The Fellowship was established by the ACLU Board of Directors in memory of Marvin M. Karpatkin, the late General Counsel of the American Civil Liberties Union, who died in January 1975, at the age of 48. Mr. Karpatkin was one of the ACLU's most active attorneys during the 1960s and early 1970s. He left his special mark in the areas of selective service and military law. His interest in those areas grew out of his own strong opposition to the Vietnam War and his desire to help those who, younger than himself, were faced with performing military service in a war they would not support.
Racial Justice Program (RJP) attorneys and staff work to challenge racial discrimination and related issues that have a disparate impact on communities of color, particularly in the areas of criminal justice and education. In the area of criminal justice, we are dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting and incarceration of people of color. In the area of education, we seek to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. Specifically, we have filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of indigent criminal and juvenile defense, racial profiling, and disparate educational opportunities. We have also campaigned against the racially-disproportionate imposition of incarceration and school discipline.

American Civil Liberties Union
Volunteer Litigation Fellowship
National Prison Project
Washington, DC
TheAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)is a national not-for-profit public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights. The National Prison Project invites applicants for a Volunteer Litigation Fellowship, to begin in October 2009.
The Project also publishes a semi-annual Journal, coordinates a nationwide network of litigators, conducts training and public education conferences, and provides expert advice and technical assistance to local community groups and Attorneys throughout the country.
The Project, with a staff of eight attorneys, has fought and continues to fight unlawful prison conditions and practices through successful litigation on behalf of prisoners in more than 20 states. Since 1991, the Project has represented prisoners in five cases before the United States Supreme Court. It is the only organization litigating prison conditions of confinement nationwide on behalf of men, women, and juveniles.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The volunteer Litigation Fellow will work closely with Staff Attorneys on major class action and damage cases in federal court. The work includes drafting pleadings and briefs, participating in discovery and motion practice, and assisting with trials and appeals. In addition, the Litigation Fellow will provide technical assistance to ACLU affiliates, cooperating lawyers, and others who seek assistance from the Project.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have strong analytical, research and verbal skills, an ability to write clearly, and a commitment to civil liberties and public interest law. A familiarity with criminal justice issues is highly desirable. The Fellow will be selected from third-year law students or junior-level attorneys (less than five years of experience) and will serve for a one-year period .
COMPENSATION:
This is a voluntary opportunity without pay or benefits. The ACLU does carry a malpractice policy that will cover the volunteer Litigation Fellow.
APPLICATIONS:
Applications should consist of a current resume, the names and phone numbers of three references, and at least one legal writing sample. The position will remain open until it is filled. Applications should be sent to:

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
2009 FALL LEGAL INTERNSHIP
AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
WOMEN’S RIGHTS PROJECT, NY
America's foremost advocate of individual rights, theAmerican Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)is a non-partisan organization founded in 1920. With more than 5 National offices and with 50 affiliates throughout the country, it is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier public interest law firms. The Women’s Right Project of the ACLU seeks legal interns for the Fall of 2009.
Founded in 1972 by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Women’s Rights Project (WRP) has been a leader in the legal battles to ensure women’s full equality in American society. WRP is dedicated to the advancement of the rights and interests of women, with a particular focus on low-income women, women of color, and immigrant women – those who historically have been the most deeply victimized by gender bias and face the most pervasive barriers to equality today.
WRP focuses on four core priority areas: employment (including the rights of low-wage immigrant women workers, trafficking victims, women with criminal convictions, women in non-traditional employment, and welfare recipients), violence against women (including battered women’s rights to be free from discrimination in housing, employment, and government services), criminal and juvenile justice issues affecting women and girls (including the impact of drug laws on women and families, as well as the rights of girls in juvenile detention), and education (including single sex education, the rights of pregnant and parenting teens, and sexual assault in schools). Cutting across these core priorities, WRP seeks to bring an international human rights framework to our litigation and advocacy. Through litigation, community outreach, advocacy, and public education, WRP pushes for change and systemic reform in those institutions that perpetuate discrimination against women.
The Women’s Rights Project has overall responsibility for implementing ACLU policy in the area of gender discrimination. WRP conducts direct litigation, files amicus curiae briefs, provides support for ACLU affiliate litigation, serves as a resource for ACLU legislative work on women’s rights and seeks to advance ACLU policy goals through public education, organizing and coalition advocacy. WRP has been an active participant in virtually all of the major gender discrimination litigation in the Supreme Court, in Congressional and public education efforts to remedy gender discrimination and other endeavors on behalf of women.
